Falling Feathers
Chapter Fourteen: Reunited
HWF

"What does a witch order at a hotel?"
"… I don't know, what?"
"Broom Service!"
"Shut up! Shut up! Just shut up!" Karsh exclaimed the vain in is head bulging.
"But you won't know the rest of the joke," Helena pouted.
"The joke?! Who freaken cares about the joke?!" he said trying to remain under control, but this had been going on for an hour now.
"I have another."
"Why!? Why do you have another witch joke?!"
Sterling seemed to shrink away with embarrassment and drew his hood over his head even though it was just the three of them as they continued to argue like they were already an old married couple. Sterling had run into them after following Hace and they were now looking for him, Karsh and Helena said that they had a plan as to how to find him and Crovix, but they wouldn't tell Sterling where they were headed. The excuse that he would not believe them was frequently used after they left Death City using Sterling's teleportation and now they were in a forest in Italy wandering hopelessly.
"I spy!" Helena exclaimed over Karsh's complaining.
"No! No you don't! You don't spy anything!" he shouted back.
"A big jerk!"
Sterling sighed, "It's Karsh."
"Sterling got it!" Helena smiled patting him on the head and looking at Karsh while hanging onto the teen, "Where's your godchild? Huh? Oh yeah! You lost him!"
"I never found him to start with!"
"Where are we going?!" Sterling exclaimed throwing his hand in the air and causing Helena to jump back.
"… You'll see when we get there," she said still cheerful.
"When we saw Pike he told us to find Hace, and I don't think Hace is here."
"Pike said to find him, he didn't say how," Karsh shrugged, "besides, didn't he seem a bit off to you?"
Helena tapped her chin thinking back to how they'd seen him in Death City, covered in blood without a single wound, his shirt torn open, and his eyes concerned with fear but also very excited looking, as if he'd just surpassed death. "Yeah, he did, but the fact he didn't tell us what was going on made it even weirder."
"I have a feeling it has to do with that witch girl," Karsh replied, stretching his arms over his head.
"I really didn't think Crovix was a witch," Sterling said, "she just didn't seem like one."
"Something's weird here," Helena nodded. "Pike acting so strange, a witch attending the DWMA, and Hace disappearing with her… there must be some reason for all of this."
"Right around here, right?" Karsh asked stopping as Helena walked by and pushed a few branches aside, behind it was the clearing Freda had been living in and this time there was a large tent set up in the middle, next to the fire.
"Freda! We brought someone for you!" she called and the woman with purple hair and green eyes stepped from the tent.
Sterling watched from behind his guardians as Freda smiled at the two before her eyes fell upon him. She watched with half a smile for a moment, almost unsure of how to express herself before walking past and ruffling the seventeen year old boy's hair.
"Sterling, this is Freda, Freda Americt and she's you mum," Helena said as Sterling drew backward shaking his head.
"No, my mom's dead," he began but Karsh took his shoulder and pushed him gently back toward the woman.
"She is your mother," Helena said placing an arm around Sterling. "We wouldn't lie to you."
"You're father told you I died when you were little, so you probably don't remember me," Freda said lifting Sterling's chin and turning it from side to side to get a good look at her child.
"… You're my mother?" Sterling questioned as he noticed her elongated canine tooth and recognizing it Hace had the same one. "… I thought you'd be an angel."
Helena and Karsh exchanged nervous glances.
"Why did you leave us?" he demanded.
Freda hesitated a moment and watched her son's displeased face.
"Aaaaaaaah, Karsh!" Helena said pointing off into the trees, "You left that thing!"
"What thing?" he asked looking in the direction she had pointed to see nothing more than more woods.
"That thing! Over there!" she exclaimed pushing him away into the forest. "See you guys later!"
Freda looked back to Sterling with an embarrassed blush that said she did not have the social skills to interact properly with him.
"I did leave you, but it wasn't safe for me there," she said taking him by the shoulder and sitting him down on one of the stones around the fire. "I was born a witch and after your father cut the magical part of my soul out I… just couldn't stay."
"… You should have taken us with you," he said without looking at her. "You don't know what we've had to do for Legion," he touched his side where his large burn scar was.
"You were too young," she said with her nose in the air.
"Yeah? Well how old should you be to run headfirst into a witch nest? That's where my brother is!"
"…?"
"He followed a witch out of Death City and I don't want him to die! He's the only person I have now that our father is dead! I don't care whether or not you're my mother, just help," Sterling said clenching his fists so tightly his knuckles had turned white.
"You can't speak to me like that! I'm your mother-!"
"My mother-! …died when I was little," he repeated backing away from her, making it obvious that whether or not she was alive now was irrelevant, she had died to him a long time ago.
Freda seemed downright insulted and speechless at Sterling's response, forgetting that he was not the forgiver of her two sons. Sterling was kind and smart but a grudge was something he could carry easily.
"Helena!" Sterling exclaimed looking into the woods to see Helena and Karsh peering around a large tree listening in on the conversation.
"He saw you!" she mumbled to Karsh as she walked over to her godchild. "Yeah?"
"We're going."
"Now hang on you little brat!" Karsh scowled, "Just because you have mommy issues does not mean we're leaving!"
Sterling seemed to shrink away under Karsh's stare.
"Or didn't you remember that we came here for Hace, not for you and your petty grudges?"
"I- I-…" Sterling began, ringing his hands.
"You're really good at making people feel bad, Karsh," Helena smiled so he couldn't tell if it was a complement or an insult.
"Freda," Karsh sighed, "You know where the witches convene, don't you?"
She nodded, "Yes, you want instructions 'cause I happen to have a map on me," she said sarcastically.
"Just tell us where it is, thank you," he said without a flicker of emotion.
Freda leaned over, took a pen and paper from her bag, and began writing down vague directions as Helena looked to Sterling.
"Didn't know you had it in you," she murmured.
"What?" he asked slowly.
"Standing up to her took guts, she always sorta freaks me out personally."
"I think that's just the witch part."
"Whatever part it is I'd rather not be around it."
Sterling shrugged as Freda handed Karsh the paper. "You don't need much more than that, just use your heads."
"Thank you," Helena said as she and Karsh took his shoulders and instantly vanished along with him, using the teleportation magic.
Not off to best the start ^^; thanks for reading!
